In face-to-face or back-to-back bearing configurations, single-row angular contact ball bearings usually need to be adjusted for the second bearing in the integrated housing to balance the reaction forces.
Free-standing german ball bearings
Freestanding angular contact ball bearings are mainly used in configurations where only one bearing is used at each bearing position. Although the width of the bearing rings has very close fitting tolerances, these bearings are not suitable for installation next to each other.
A pre-adjusted bearing arrangement using only one bearing at each bearing position is called a cross-alignment arrangement and is usually used for short shafts. During installation, the required clearance and pretension can be achieved in these configurations by moving one bearing ring axially.
Adjusting the face-to-face german ball bearings arrangement
If possible, it is recommended to adjust the face-to-face bearing arrangement when the shaft is in a vertical position so that the lower bearing can be used as a support.
Measure the distance between the side of the outer ring and the side of the bearing housing (Figure 1). Determine the required shoulder width of the end cap based on the required axial clearance or preload required during operation. If necessary, determine the necessary thickness of the gasket to be inserted between the bearing housing and the end cover or between the outer ring and the end cover.
Install the end caps (and gaskets) that are formed and turn the bearing arrangement back to a horizontal position.
For german ball bearings arrangements with clearance, use a dial gauge to measure the remaining axial clearance to verify the adjustment results (Figure 2).
When adjusting the back-to-back german ball bearings configuration, screw the lock nut or bolt into the end plate and turn the shaft occasionally (Figure 3).
For german ball bearings arrangements with clearance, use a dial indicator to measure the remaining axial clearance (Figure 4). If the remaining clearance is too large, tighten the lock nut or end plate bolt. If the remaining clearance is too small, remove the bearing and start over.
If a spacer is used between the two bearing inner rings, the width of the spacer can be ground accordingly to set the required clearance or pretension.
General matched bearings and matched bearings
When two or more angular contact german ball bearings are installed next to each other, a universal matched bearing or a matched bearing should be used. These bearings are specially manufactured to achieve a given internal clearance or pre-tension and/or uniform load distribution when installed next to each other without the use of gaskets or similar devices.
Angular contact ball bearing with combined inner ring
For double-row angular contact ball bearings and four-point contact ball bearings with combined inner rings, a specific installation sequence should be followed.
(Figure 5) First push the inner half of the inner ring to the correct position (1). Then place the outer ring of the steel ball-cage assembly onto the half of the inner ring that has been installed (2). Finally, push the outer half of the inner ring so that it abuts the installed inner half (3).
Bearing mounting tools and shock-resistant rubber hammers can be used to install small inner rings; for larger german ball bearings, heat should be applied before installation.
One side of the outer ring and half of the inner ring have an asterisk, which allows the german ball bearings to be installed in place as originally manufactured.
